A new pocket rocket based on the Rabbit appeared for 1983. It was the GTI. Weighing in at just over 1900lbs, it got around quite well for the time. The engine was a 1.8L SOHC EFI I4 making 90hp and 100ft/lbs of torque.

Included was a tuned exhaust system for a bit more sound. Standard was a 5-speed manual transmission. Other features on the GTI included wider wheels & tires, blacked out trim, wheel flares, tighter steering, better seats and performance instrumentation.

The GTI is still made today and the vintage models have a sizeable following in modern times.
